Once upon a time in the lovely city of Rome, Rita's future Daddy owned a jewelry store where he made gorgeous items from diamonds, gold, sapphires, and other precious gems and metals. Mr. Diana fell in love with a delightful and pretty young lady, Iole, named after Hercules's love. Iole later became Rita's Mommy.
While on vacation in America, Mr. Diana was introduced to Harry Winston; impressed with Mr. Diana's jewelry designing talents, Mr. Winston decided to sponsor his Visa so he could continue to make beautiful jewelry for him. Mr. Diana missed his family and wanted them to join him in America. The family, (including baby Rita), went to receive immunizations. After a near fatal allergic reaction to one of the vaccines, the family doctor decided that baby Rita was too ill to travel to America. He recommended the family not travel until she was well. They had to wait for the next luxury liner. In a rare twist of fate the ill-fated Andrea Doria sank on the very trip the Diana family had booked tickets on, and would have been on had little Rita not been ill!
Rita was raised in Brooklynn and then Manhattan. She grew up with an artistic Mother, a Father who won many awards for his designs, and a Brother who became a well known clothing designer in New York City's fashionable SoHo district. In this environment she naturally blossomed with her own creative endeavors.
In high school Rita began to make and sell fringed leather pouches. At seventeen she began working in a boutique that sold custom made clothing to performers including the Isely Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Darryl Hall, Crown Heights Affair, Cool and the Gang, Earth, Wind and Fire, Daryll Hall, along with various magicians, and Bruce Springsteen, (and Rita got to measure his inseam!).
When Rita was twenty she opened a modeling agency. Being tied to an office environment began to drain her energy. She realized that office life was not for her, and decided to close the agency.
Rita next went into business with a friend from Bombay, designing leather clothing. She found herself in a unpleasant environment and realized it was time for a change.
While Rita worked as a receptionist for a health club, she started making belts that she sold to many local boutiques, and Tiana the company was born!
Tiana with its belts and handbags evolved into Mylinka handbags and jewelry (and soon to come Home
Decor!).
Many wonderful and well-dressed ladies including Patricia Kennealy Morrison, Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Dolly Parton, Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Rudner, the wonderful Mom of Chris Tucker, and The Queen of the Bahamas just to name a few, own Rita's beautiful handbags.
Mylinka was in New York City, complete with a factory and five showrooms throughout the country. 'Rita the artist' watched as 'Rita the businesswoman' was born. While the artist in her heart yearned for textures and colors, Rita the businesswoman was forced to deal with deadlines and administration. Sales were soaring, but her spirit was sinking. Rita knew the company had grown to the point where the bottom line was more important than the art. She hated it. She had to get out.
The stress affected Rita's health. After placing her New York City employees in new jobs, Rita moved to a cottage in the mountains. The land awakens with beautiful sunrises, Humzee the hummingbird, Chippy the chipmunk (who has learned to eat from her hand), and many lovely butterflies.
Rita loves the change of pace, and recommends a less stressful, more natural life in whatever way possible to all that will listen. Even though the move from stress city to the mountains meant that at times there was extreme ineffeciency, Rita thanks all of her friends and customers that patiently encouraged and supported her much wished for change from factory to design studio.
